I found a great hike, one that would also take me past some impressive waterfalls, called a wasserfall in German.In the Dutch supermarkets German wine is not popular. As much as I love long-distance hikes like that, I didn’t have my gear, so I was looking for more of a day hike. There’s the West Way ( Westweg), for example, a 285 kilometre hiking path from Pforzheim to Basel. The Black Forest has many hiking options. Since I was visiting the region in fall, I wanted to go for a hike and see some of the colourful autumn foliage. The Black Forest has a network of 23 000 kilometres of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. Instead, the forest is scattered between agricultural fields and rural settlements, small villages and a few large towns and cities like Freiburg im Breisgau. Unlike how I imagined it, the Black Forest not a dense forest. Originally full of deciduous trees and firs, and spruce trees at higher elevations, an active forestry industry changed that it’s now mostly spruce. The Black Forest is huge, covering an area about 160 kilometres by 30 kilometres. Known for random things like cake and ham, and gnomes and cuckoo clocks, I was interested in getting to know this curious place. When I lived in Strasbourg, France, I could see the Black Forest mountains from my apartment.
